Coloratio
Mathematical precision for the messy art of mixing. A utility tool that eliminates trial-and-error for artists.
Solving the artist's dilemma with data.
I created Coloratio in December 2024 as a fun project to help South African craftspeople who often work with primary colors due to cost limitations. Using a color wheel, I explored the colors that can be made from simple ratios of primary colors, black, and white, thereby expanding the palette. My app provides an easy color reference for users. However, there are challenges. One major issue is the difference between digital screens and actual pigments. Screens emit light, and lighting modes are changeable on digital devices; this can alter how colors appear compared to real-life pigment. The other major issue is that pigment concentration can vary in different products, which, when mixed, results in shades different from their theoretical counterpart on the app.
